AK Press 2010 Catalogs are here!

Posted in Uncategorized on November 30, 2009 by Red & Black Cafe

Just a heads up that our good friends at AK Press sent us a box of their 2010 catalogs.  They look beautiful and are chock full of good things to read.  You should pick one up, and then become a “Friend of AK Press.”  There are some stickers too.  Brutal!

Looking for information about events happening at the cafe?  Look no further!  The December communique is now available on the website.  Just click on the page, “Red and Black Communique” on the right hand side. Remember, it will be updated monthly.

If you would rather have a printed copy, there will be booklets available at the cafe starting this afternoon.  It’s quite a new thing we’re trying, so be sure to give us some feedback!

We are now an official IWW shop!

Posted in Uncategorized on November 20, 2009 by Red & Black Cafe

You all may remember a few months ago when we announced our collective decision to become an IWW (Industrial Workers of the World) closed shop.  This meant that all workers at the cafe, current and future, are and would be union members.  It was an act of solidarity and an appreciation of our roots, some of which lie within the union.  After we were approved by the Portland branch to become an official union shop, the motion then went to the General Executive Board and was approved. So we are now Portland’s official (and only) IWW cafe!

Unfamiliar with the IWW?  Read this, from the website:

“[The IWW] is a fighting labor union that believes that the interests of labor can be fully served only when working people are united as a class. It wants to see all on the same job united, all in the same industry in one union, all who work for wages in one big union.

The IWW differs sharply from the position of other unions in that, we believe the problems of the working class can not be solved by begging crumbs from employers or praying to politicians for favors. While it fights for better conditions today, the IWW insists that working people are entitled to everything they produce, instead of a meager share.

There will be insecurity and hunger among those who toil for as long as there is an employing class that benefits from low wages and evil working conditions. The IWW holds that there can be no solution to industrial warfare, no end to injustice and want, until the profit system itself is abolished.

In striving to unite labor as a class in one big union the IWW also seeks to build the structure of a new and better social order within the shell of the old system which fails to provide for the needs of all.”

For more information, we encourage you to visit the website, http://www.iww.org, and read more about the union.

We are happy to announce that we now have a PayPal donate button in the sidebar of our homepage.  If you would like to make a donation to the Red and Black, just click the button!  You can donate any amount you wish, and the entire transaction is secure.  It’s really easy, and donations of ANY amount would be greatly appreciated.

Of course, if you feel like you have $5 burning a hole in your pocket, come on down for a fair trade coffee or tea, a bowl of noodles or a nice cold glass of Kombucha on tap.

Thank you, friends, for your support.

How to navigate this site.

Hey all.  We just wanted to give you a heads up about what you can find on this site and how to find it.  All of our sub-pages are in a list to the right under “Pages.”  There you can find all of the information you need about the cafe, including our hours, menu, and safer space policy.  In addition, the “Red and Black Communique” page will be your one-stop to find all of the events listed for a given month.  This communique gets posted to Portland Indymedia every month, as well e-mailed out to our mailing list.  You can also find printed calendars in many spots around town.

If you would like to join our mailing list, click the subscribe link on the bottom right hand side.  This will send an e-mail to the listserv, hosted by Riseup.net.  Just send a blank e-mail and you’re done!

Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions or comments about the site or things you would like to see.  Our e-mail address can be found in our header.

This is the new website for the Red and Black Cafe!  We are currently working on trying to have a “real” functioning website, but we found that having Myspace and Facebook accounts simply weren’t enough.

Henceforth, this shall be the official website!  Check it often to stay up to date on the happenings of the cafe, as well as to get more information about events that we’re hosting.  If you have any questions, comments, or just want to say hi, e-mail us at the address above.  Thanks, and we hope to see you soon!
